Respect, Courtesy and Character: The Heart of Taekwondo

The tenets of Taekwondo and why character matters as much as technique.

Taekwondo is not just about kicks. At its core, it is about becoming a better person. Many schools teach five classic tenets of Taekwondo.

Courtesy

Being polite and respectful to everyone: instructors, classmates, parents and teachers. Bowing is a daily reminder.

Integrity

Knowing right from wrong and doing what is right, even when no one is watching.

Perseverance

Never giving up. Whether it is a difficult form or a challenge at school, students learn to keep going.

Self-control

Controlling your body, words and emotions. Martial artists learn to use their skills responsibly.

Indomitable spirit

Having the courage to face challenges with confidence and a positive attitude.

Why character comes first

Skills without character are dangerous. Character without skills still makes a great person. In Taekwondo, we build both, but character is the foundation.

Character at home

Parents can reinforce the tenets by talking about them at dinner, praising courteous behavior and connecting challenges to perseverance.
