Taekwondo and Karate are two of the most popular martial arts in the world. Both are excellent, but they have different roots and emphases.
Origins
Karate developed in Okinawa, Japan, influenced by Chinese martial arts. Taekwondo developed in Korea in the mid-20th century, drawing on Korean traditions and some Karate influence.
Kicks vs. hands
The biggest difference is emphasis. Taekwondo is famous for fast, high and spinning kicks, using the legs' reach and power. Karate generally places more balance on hand strikes and low to mid-level kicks.
Forms
Both arts practice forms. In Taekwondo they are called poomsae; in Karate they are called kata. Both develop precision, balance and memory.
Sport and competition
Taekwondo is an Olympic sport with electronic scoring for sparring. Karate debuted in the Olympics in 2021. Both have strong tournament scenes.
Which is better?
Neither is "better." The best martial art is the one taught by a great instructor at a school where you or your child feel welcome and motivated to train consistently.
