Kicks are what make Taekwondo famous. These five foundational kicks are the building blocks for everything else.
1. Front kick (ap chagi)
Lift the knee, extend the leg straight forward and strike with the ball of the foot. Re-chamber the knee before setting the foot down.
2. Roundhouse kick (dollyeo chagi)
Pivot on the supporting foot, turn the hips and snap the leg around to strike with the instep or ball of the foot. The most common kick in sparring.
3. Side kick (yeop chagi)
Chamber the knee across the body, then thrust the leg out sideways and strike with the heel or blade of the foot. A powerful kick that relies on hip alignment.
4. Axe kick (naeryo chagi)
Raise the leg high and bring the heel down onto the target. Requires flexibility and control.
5. Back kick (dwit chagi)
Turn your back to the target, look over your shoulder and drive the heel straight back. A powerful counter-attack.
