Poomsae (pronounced "poom-say") are choreographed patterns of blocks, strikes and kicks performed against imaginary opponents. They are a core part of Taekwondo training.
Why practice forms?
Forms train technique, balance, focus and memory all at once. They are like a dictionary of Taekwondo movements put into a sequence.
Taegeuk forms
Many Kukkiwon-style schools teach the Taegeuk series for colored belts: eight forms that grow in complexity as students advance. Black belts learn advanced forms such as Koryo.
Elements judged in forms
- Accuracy of stances and techniques
- Balance and control
- Power and speed
- Rhythm and expression
- Focus and eye direction
Mental benefits
Memorizing and performing a form requires concentration. Many students find practicing forms calming, almost meditative.
Forms competition
Poomsae is also a competitive event, with athletes scored on accuracy and presentation.
Practicing at home
Students can practice forms anywhere with a little space. Even five minutes a day leads to faster progress.
