Trying something new can feel intimidating. Here is exactly what to expect at your first Taekwondo class so you or your child can walk in confident.
Before you arrive
Book your trial class ahead of time and arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to check in and meet the instructor.
What to wear
Comfortable athletic clothes like a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants are perfect. Taekwondo is trained barefoot, so no special shoes are needed. Remove jewelry before class.
What to bring
- A water bottle
- Hair ties for long hair
- A positive attitude
Bowing in
Class starts with a bow to show respect to the instructor and fellow students. Instructors will show you how.
Warm-up
Expect light jogging, jumping jacks and stretches to prepare your body.
Learning basics
New students learn stances, a few basic kicks and blocks. Instructors give plenty of individual help.
Drills and games
Kids' classes include fun games that build skills. Adult classes may include pad work and conditioning.
Ending class
Class ends with a bow and often a few words about character, such as respect or perseverance.
After class
Ask questions about programs, schedules and belts. Instructors are happy to help you plan the next step.
